calendarindigoAs we approach a New Year and indeed a new decade, here’s a few predictions for what I think may happen over the next 12 months in the world of books and publishing ….

1. 1st generation ebook readers will be selling on ebay for less than $50 as new entrants and variants are introduced – e.g. A4, double A5, colour, flexible …

2. Dan Brown will have finally run out of so-called secret societies to write about (unless he speaks to me as I have a cracking idea for him)

3. We will start to enjoy computer screens in portrait mode as opposed to landscape mode as the Apple Tablet is introduced

4. For any publishers that sadly go into liquidation, at least 10 new ones will start up

5. The “freemium” model will become more common where the book is free with advertising

6. We will see e-witers coming on the market – a boon for authors.

7. I will write and publish at least three new books (there I’ve said it publicly so it has to happen) …

  • Hi,

If agent-hunting for a mediocre writer like me continues to be what it as is evident in the link below, then I can only pray: BLIND SUBMISSION

Having said all that, let me assure you that classical publishing will not be wiped out from the face of this earth despite e-books etc for years to come now. That is anyday the final read. Tks

My vision is that writers will truly ‘get’ the importance of authenticity as we move into the emerging holisitic values of the new decade.

More opportunities will arise for writers to explore their authentic voice – on the page and in the world.

Connecting with other like-minded conscious and creative souls will become a priority.

This will lead to a genuine, and more deeply rewarding, experience of successful published authorship in the contemporary marketplace.

    Looking forward to it!

That is a beautiful sentiment Julia and one that I, for one, will wholeheartedly sign up for …

    Hi Julia,
I love your vision. Ditto the bookwright; I will whole heartedly sign up for as well.

  • It’s more of a hope than a vision but I hope that 2010 will be the year that writers stop writing for businesses for less than the minimum wage, or even NOTHING! Every time someone does so it undermines everyone else who is earning a living through writing. And maybe if we hold the line it will stop those businesses offering us ‘opportunities’ where the first 10 articles have to be written for free so we can demonstrate our ability.

It will truly allow freedom and equality for all because everyone will be able to afford ‘education’ and access knowledge careless of background or where you happen live in the world.

Perhaps, we shall see free thinking school communities gathering together to introduce more creativity and spontaniety for our children…to develop the world future leaders.

2010 is going to be a great year.

  • Alot of bloggers are not too pleased with the new iPad.There was 2 much hoopla regarding it and lots of bloggers got dissapointed. You see, I for one see lots of the cool potential of the gadget. Third-party apps for making music, games, newsprints and magazines and books, all sorts of cool stuff, but IMHO they failed to sell it very well (aside from the books). It smells kind of unfinished

Apple are quite smart – they don’t need to specify how the device will be used. Amazon’s Kindle is kinda tied to their bookstore. The Apple iPad is tied to developers’ imaginations :-)

I hope everyone achieves their goals.

Nicky Marshall put me in touch with you by the way.

Why stop at one? Or why not write one and publish it in print, for the Apple iPhone/iPad and the Amazon Kindle – Product Details
