Every once in a while you come across a book that makes you stop, think and reflect.
Waking from Sleep by Steve Taylor is one of those.
It is an illusion of the human condition that we think we are awake when we’re not sleeping. In ‘reality’, when we are what we think of as awake, we are still kind of asleep.
Like all these things, it’s a matter of degree and experience. If you don’t know what being awake is like, how will you know when you are?
So what’s so good about Steve’s book is his description of many case studies and personal experiences that have happened to pretty ordinary people.
When you read it you will realise you have almost certainly experienced one or two awakenings already. You may have assumed they are random or inaccessible unless by chance or ‘under the influence’.
Well the good news is that they are indeed accessible to all of us – at any time – and you don’t need to spend a month on a silent retreat halfway up a mountain side in Tibet to have one.
